A controversial gun law went into effect this fall which permits concealed handgun carry license holders to possess their weapons on public college and university campuses. Many students say they feel safer knowing they can carry a gun on campus. Others believe that campus is not the place to carry guns. Nonetheless, the new law has taken effect. However, firearms will not be allowed everywhere on campus. The list of places handguns will not be permitted includes buildings hosting sporting events and buildings offering student clinical and medical services. In addition, watch for “Handguns Prohibited” signs. These notices prohibit the possession of a firearm in any particular University property. Private colleges and universities in Texas have the choice of whether, or not, to opt into the campus carry law.
